The swelling waves of heartbreak,
lying shattered beneath a moon--
the darkness of cold night’s embrace,
comforting only in its numb veiling
where the glitter of silver eyes in the heavens
outshine the breaking of silent tears.

Oh, were there that fate had grown compassion,
while in your absence I had wished it so,
clinging to strong memory and its deceiving, lingering light,
shielding behind damned eyelids the vestige of your wake.

A depth of lost devotion striking hope into a corner,
where the gusty winds of uncontrolled events allow nothing to be lit.

Feelings are but a lonely tide that brushes ‘gainst its toes;
No room for secret lovers’ doors, that lead to hidden halls,
for too strong’s the aura of resolve and blasé apathy.

Logic grips the scepter, claiming even more the throne…

So recede these crests of heartbreak,
return to whence you came,
for while your presence has not been passed by,
you’ll find no home in my heart’s domain.

Author's Comments

This was born of catharsis and probably my favorite poem of all those I've written because it was driven by no conscious thought. I didn't realize what I was penning until I was done and could read it as a whole. Any edits I've made since are purely grammatical.

Written August 2006.

I love this poem. The old school feel to it makes it for me.

Wow. This is truly insightful. It has a way of somehow applying to many.
